Why Uptime Matters for SEO

When your site goes down, it's not just your visitors who notice. Search engine crawlers — Googlebot, Bingbot, YandexBot — visit your pages on their own schedule. If they hit a 5xx error or a timeout, that page gets flagged as unreliable. A few hours of downtime during a crawl window can trigger a chain reaction:

  1. Crawl errors accumulate in Google Search Console
  2. Pages get temporarily dropped from the index
  3. Rankings fall as Google loses confidence in your site's reliability
  4. Recovery takes days to weeks — even after the site comes back up

The worst part? You might not even know it happened. A 3 AM server crash that resolves by 6 AM looks like nothing — until you check your rankings a week later and discover pages missing from Google's index and a 15-position drop on your best keywords.

The Gap Between Uptime Tools and SEO Tools

Traditional uptime monitors like UptimeRobot, Pingdom, or Better Stack do one thing well: they tell you when your site is down. You get an SMS, a Slack message, maybe an email. The site comes back up, the incident closes, and everyone moves on.

But none of them answer the question that actually matters for your business: did that downtime hurt my rankings?

To answer that, you'd need to cross-reference your uptime incidents with your Search Console data, check if Googlebot visited during the outage, compare your ranking positions before and after, and look at traffic trends for the affected pages. That means switching between 3-4 different tools and doing the analysis manually.

Availability Checks

SEO Monitor sends HTTP requests to your site at configurable intervals (from every minute to every hour, default every 5 minutes). Each check records one of three states:

The checker follows redirects and uses a dedicated SEOMonitor-UptimeCheck/1.0 user agent, so your analytics won't be polluted with check traffic.

Smart Incident Detection

A single failed check doesn't mean your site is down — it could be a network hiccup, a momentary load spike, or a routing issue. That's why SEO Monitor uses a two-strike rule: an incident only opens after 2 consecutive failed checks, and only closes after 2 consecutive successful checks.

This eliminates the false alarm fatigue that plagues simpler monitoring setups. When you get an alert, it means something real is happening.

Email Alerts

When an incident opens, you receive a [DOWN] notification email with the error details. When the site recovers, you get a [RECOVERED] email with the total downtime duration. Multiple team members can receive alerts — just add their email addresses in project settings.

Visual Status Dashboard

The uptime overview gives you three views of your site's availability:

Uptime bar — a status-page style horizontal bar where each cell represents a time period. Green means 100% uptime, orange indicates minor issues (99-100%), and red flags significant downtime (below 99%). Hover over any cell to see the exact timestamp, uptime percentage, check count, and average response time.

Response time chart — a line chart showing average response time over time. Even when your site is technically "up," response time trends reveal performance degradation. A site that gradually slows from 200ms to 2500ms over a month is heading for trouble — both for users and for Core Web Vitals.

Incidents table — a chronological list of all downtime events with start time, end time, duration, cause, and the number of failed checks. Quick history at a glance.

You can switch between three time resolutions:

Uptime Quick Stat

Your project's 30-day uptime percentage appears in the header stats row, right next to your traffic and indexing numbers. Color-coded: green (99.5%+), yellow (95%+), red (below 95%).

Connecting Uptime to SEO Impact

Here's what makes this different from a standalone uptime tool.

When you see an incident in the uptime timeline, you can immediately scroll to the traffic and ranking charts on the same page. Did rankings drop after the outage? Did impressions fall? Did Googlebot encounter errors during that window?

The Change History & Correlation feature lets you overlay content changes, deployments, and downtime events on the same traffic chart. A deploy at 2 PM that caused a 30-minute outage, followed by a ranking drop three days later — that pattern becomes instantly visible when all the data is in one place.

Configuration Options

All settings are per-project, accessible in the project's Settings tab:

Custom monitoring URL — by default, the checker hits your project's main URL. You can override this to check a specific endpoint (like /api/health) or a different domain (like your CDN origin).

Degraded threshold — response time above this value marks the check as "degraded" instead of "up." Adjust based on your site's normal performance. A static site might use 1000ms, while a complex app might use 5000ms.

When Uptime Monitoring Matters Most

During deployments. A bad deploy can take your site down in seconds. With monitoring enabled, you'll know within minutes — not when a customer tweets about it.

After infrastructure changes. Migrated to a new host? Changed your CDN? Moved to a new region? Uptime monitoring catches issues immediately.

For sites with traffic from multiple time zones. A 2 AM outage in your time zone is prime time for users (and crawlers) elsewhere.

During traffic spikes. A viral post or a marketing campaign can overwhelm your server. The degraded state catches performance drops before they become full outages.
